Chang Thai – Dishes to share – Top for taste

Main meal and drink USD $15 – $20 based on two sharing

Recommended for families, groups, business meetings

I remember visiting this wonderful restaurant in 2017 and absolutely loving the food. I was pleasantly surprised to see that standards had been maintained when I revisited in September 2023. My review here is based on this 2023 visit.

Chang Thai was once located on Churchill Avenue in Gunhill. It is now located at the corner of Quorn Avenue and Norfolk Road in Mrt Pleasant.  Areas close to this location are Borrowdale, Groombridge, Alex Park, Vainona, Emerald Hill and Marlborough. I haven’t been to the new location yet so I can’t tell you about the parking but this is a very easy place to get to. A walk away from Arundel Village.

Three of us were dining on this day and we were seated easily with only one or two other tables occupied. We did not need to book in advance. It was just after lunch during a week day. We were seated outside as it was a warm afternoon and though the gardens are not vast, the atmosphere was good. Sadly, our waiter seemed annoyed at being asked more about the menu and was quite abrupt when answering questions. Little advice was given on what sides came with certain dishes and about portion sizes. I know, I despair too! Anyway, let me tell you what I wish the waiter had told us. Not only are the dishes here incredibly moreish, they are big enough for sharing. A meat dish is enough for two, a side of rice the same. It’s the perfect place to order a few different dishes to pass around the table making it very reasonable when you want a meal out but don’t want to spend too much. And if you’re ever at a loss for what meat dish to have, the cashew chicken is award-winning in my book! Sorry to let the side down but I did not have dessert. I was full and honestly I didn’t want to deal with waiter again.

Waiting time for food was not bad at all. The food was hot and some of the tastiest I’ve ever had. I couldn’t fault any of the chicken, rice or pork that we had. As it was a school day, we had non-alcoholic shandies and these were also really good!

I would highly recommend this place for the food and it’s perfect for a change of cuisine (assuming most Zimbabwean households are not eating Thai daily). It’s perfect for families, groups of friends or quick business meetings over lunch. I’m hoping the next time I visit the service will match the food!
