Alo Alo – Convenient and peaceful

Main meal and drink USD20-$40

Recommended for Couples, Small groups

I have always wanted to visit this lovely restaurant! I was so excited to be able to do so at the end of April 2023.

Alo Alo is located at Arundel Village in Arundel, a low density area in Harare. This area is close to Mt Pleasant, Groombridge, Alexandra Park and Emerald Hill. Arundel Village is a small shopping complex with a supermarket and other shops and eateries. There is plenty of parking, some right at the entrance of the restaurant. There are tables outside the restaurant, and the garden comes as a lovely surprise in the small shopping village. The aesthetics are pleasing, creating a nice, calm environment with a little something that catches the eye at every turn. There are quite a few cats walking around or sleeping in the garden, if that’s your thing, you’re in luck!

We went for lunch on a week day and did not have to book in advance for a table. We did not have to wait at all to be seated.

The waiters were pleasant and professional. We had one experienced waiter and one in training. Watching them in action told a story about the high standards of the restaurant and how important these are to staff. They both made easy conversation and were kind enough to show us the lunch time set menu from which we ate. I had fish and chips and then ice-cream for dessert.

The food was good, the portions generous. I particularly enjoyed the mini loaf served before the meal. It’s a lovely touch, the cheesy bread itself very delicious. The fish was tasty, with proper tartar sauce (thank you!) and the ice-cream was served attractively. It’s too easy to lean back and get lost in the peaceful garden so our lunch was long-drawn, with few others dining at that time. It was most enjoyable. I however would like to sample other dishes at this restaurant in search of that wow factor that it’s famous for so I’m saving up to visit again.

This is a pricier than average place to eat which also has an à la carte menu. At the time of visiting, I estimate that for a main meal and drink one would require USD $20-$40. No, no typo. You are looking to pay considerably more if you would like a starter or dessert or both. Alo Alo is perfect for a quiet lunch, a romantic meal or a little something to spoil yourself!
