Mozambik – Sea food heaven

Main meal and drink USD$15 -$35

Recommended for families, small groups, large groups

Mozambik restaurants made their entry into Zimbabwe in 2023. They claim to serve the best Portuguese cuisine in a ‘Mozambican Barraca vibe’. They started off in Greystone Park and have opened another restaurant on Enterprise Road. You know how it is when a place is new! Tik Tokers were Tik Toking, slay queens were slaying, flexers were flexing and Instagram pictures were being dropped like confetti. It seemed everyone had either been there or was planning to go there. So naturally, I wanted to keep away. I know I’m an odd ball but I’m one of those who are very weary of hype. I wanted to give it a couple of years and then test it out. As it turned out, a trusted source had been there a few times and they were very keen to go back. The two of us were taking a loved one out for a treat over the Christmas period so I agreed. I had zero intentions of blogging about the place.

The three of us visited Mozambik on Enterprise Road in December 2023. Enterprise Road is one of those major roads in Harare that is easily accessible from the city centre, Highlands, Newlands, Chisipite, Mandara, Gunhill, Borrowdale, Greystone Park, Greendale, Manressa and many other areas. If you can get onto Glenara Road or Harare Drive or Churchill Road or Acturus Road, you can access Enterprise Road. The entry to the restaurant itself is a little tricky. Look out for the sign and drive slowly as you approach as it’s all too easy to drive past it.

Just in case I didn’t quite paint the picture properly, this restaurant is busy! You do have to book in advance as we had done. Parking was easy with an assistant or two helping to direct traffic. Our table for three was set up right by the bar. This didn’t prove to be an issue with human traffic as I had initially feared and we were grateful to get an inside table as it was the rainy season and it did rain while we were there. With it being the festive season, nearly all the tables were taken. The gardens felt large and we loved the little play area for children at the bottom of the garden.

We were welcomed quickly when we arrived and our waiter was very pleasant and chatty. One of us ordered the chicken and ribs and two of us shared that sea food platter with the squid heads. Drinks were served promptly and there was a very reasonable waiting time for the food which was served hot.

Can we have a moment of silence for the sea food platter?!

Yes, it was that good, the above sentence had to be a paragraph all on its own. It came with a choice of sauces, one of them being garlic. After a very brief (and I do mean VERY BRIEF) discussion about the possible effects of garlic breath on our loved ones, we went for the garlic sauce. My goodness it was a dream!! The platter is meant for two sharing and it came with a choice of sides. I chose chips and I’m nearly drooling as I remember dipping them in the garlic sauce and savouring the contrast between their softness and the crunch of the squid heads. I’m sure you’ve come to expect this by now but I also had some chicken and ribs from the other plate. The chicken was buttery and the ribs fell apart gracefully. We could not finish the food so I would say the portion size was good. I was thoroughly impressed and for days after my first thought when I woke up was that sea food platter. Slightly sad, I know.

Did I dessert? Yes, yes I did! We all did. I highly recommend the soufflé. Warm gooey chocolate centre in a perfectly risen dough. It was a fitting ending to the sea food lunch. The risoles were new to me and I didn’t like the oily taste of the pastry combined with the chocolate.

We had some lovely cocktails and maybe a little too much wine which you can get by the bottle to share. Admittedly this was a special occasion and we went all out so our final bill was quite a bit. However, on a day when you are doing the main meal and drink only combo, you can expect to pay about USD $15 to maybe around $35.

I will definitely be returning to Mozambik this year, I look forward to it. I hope to let you know in a few years how it’s going with this new establishment but for now, it comes highly recommended for families and small and large groups.
